As we pile on fleeces and turn up the electric blanket to keep warm in February, it may not seem a very logical idea to be talking about hiring a temporary commercial chiller. However, it’s around now that planning and organising for work commitments and social events during the year will be taking place, so it’s actually perfect timing to have chillers on your mind if you’re putting together an outdoor event.

Anyone in charge of organising an event which is dependent on the vagaries of British weather has a difficult task. The day or weekend could be dull, chilly and wet (in which case, how about hiring a temporary boiler?) but with the onset of climate change there is a distinct possibility that the sun could be blazing down and the Met Office forecasting a heatwave. In July 2022, it issued a red warning for extreme heat for the first time ever, covering much of central and South East England, with the government declaring an emergency.

With this in mind, it’s crucial to be prepared in case your event turns out to be hot stuff – but not in quite the way you intended.

One of the largest markets for temporary commercial chillers, in conjunction with an air handling unit, is on location shoots or studio production for the UK’s burgeoning film industry. Filming runs to a tight schedule and any delays caused by the wrong kind of weather can be extremely costly. Enormous temporary structures are frequently used not only for filming but also for all the associated operations such as catering, wardrobe facilities and admin functions. If the weather is extremely hot and hundreds of actors are costumed, made up and waiting to be called, hanging around in the heat is likely to cause makeup to run and people to become very uncomfortable, or could even lead to heat exhaustion. An air-conditioned space will help to alleviate these issues.

Looking ahead to next winter, one of the country’s most popular Christmas outings is a trip to an ice rink. With climate change making our winters warmer, ice rinks begin to turn to slush, making for a disappointing skating experience and a loss of revenue if the rink needs to be closed. Hiring a commercial chiller can ensure the ice remains firm and chilled to exactly the right temperature.

Many summer events take place in large marquees or other temporary structures, and it makes sense to think ahead about the comfort of your attendees. If you have VIP guests, they will appreciate an air-conditioned area to retreat to if the outside temperature becomes challenging. If your event involves animals, such as an agricultural show, their comfort and wellbeing is an important consideration. There may be a medical tent, for example at a music festival, and in high temperatures this is likely to be busy treating people with dehydration, sunstroke and heat exhaustion. A cool interior will go a long way towards alleviating symptoms.

It’s also a good idea to have a temporary chiller as back-up in case of a malfunction or other unforeseen problem. It makes sound commercial sense too – people will be less inclined to attend your event, spend money and review it favourably if they’re going to be uncomfortably hot. Filming or other work will be much easier in a cool atmosphere and productivity will increase hugely.

Nobody knows what the weather is going to be like six months in advance; it’s the one thing on your no doubt extensive event to-do list that you have no control over. What you can do is prepare as much as possible by putting in place a contingency plan for temporary commercial chiller hire.

When we’re called in to help with this, we send one of our fully qualified and accredited engineers to visit the site and prepare a quote for installation. Careful preparation and strict adherence to safety guidelines are crucial; among other things, we’ll need to consider proximity to power sources, access and installation areas, the space available for the unit, the most effective type of chiller unit for the job and compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Once we’ve completed our site visit, we’ll have a blueprint for the specific requirements of your event. As it approaches, if the weather forecast looks untypically tropical, simply pick up the phone and your chiller unit can be installed immediately.
